Founded in the 1971-1972 academic year by Prof. Dr. Ercüment KURAN, the Department of History provided service courses to various faculties of the university until the end of the 1974-1975 academic year and also provided postgraduate education. The Department of History, which started to accept students at the undergraduate level as of the 1975-1976 academic year, gave its first graduates in the 1979-1980 semester.
The aim of the department is to investigate and examine all periods of human history and Turkish history, especially recent times, within the framework of world history according to scientific principles, to develop new research methods, to train staff who can conduct research in the field of history at the undergraduate level, to work in archives, libraries and similar institutions related to history and information, and to provide students who aim to become history teachers with the necessary field knowledge before the non-thesis master's program.
The Department of History has following branches: General Turkish History, Medieval History, Early Modern History, Modern History, History of Ottoman Institutions and Civilization and History of the Republic of Turkey.
